Home (Residential) EV Charging Point Installations

Why install a dedicated EV Charger at home?

You could argue that a standard 3-pin household socket can be used to charge your EV vehicle, and this is true and legal in the UK.

However, charging with a dedicated EV charger delivers a number of benefits and as your local electrical experts we recommend considering them.

  • Rapid charging (ordinarily 7 kW instead of ~2.3 kW) which reaching full charge in around 6–8 hours (EV Charger) versus 12–20 hours (standard 3-pin socket)
  • Built-in safety features like overload protection and suitable earthing
  • Smart‑features: schedule charging at off‑peak rates, monitor use via app, part of your home smart automation system, integrate with solar panels or battery systems
  • Access to UK government grants for approved installers
  • Future compatibility as EVs evolve and charging needs change
  • Insurance compliance with a certified installation

We offer a full range of EV chargers, including slow (3kW), fast (7–22kW), and rapid/ultra-rapid (50kW+) options, suitable for home, workplace, and public installations. All are compatible with major EV brands and can be tailored to your charging needs.

The OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant (also known as the EV Chargepoint Grant for renters and flat owners) is a UK government-funded initiative, administered by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV). It helps cover the cost of buying and installing a smart home EV charging point for eligible households.

There is no limit to the cost or the brand of the EV Charging Point, but the grant is a maximum of £350 or 75% of the charging unit cost – whichever is lower.

Yes — most chargers are compatible with all major EVs, so your existing unit will work if you change cars. And once the main wiring is installed, the charging point itself can be easily swapped or upgraded to suit future vehicles or faster charging speeds.

You can still charge your EV using on‑street chargers, community charging hubs, or council‑approved cable solutions. We’ll also guide you to the best local public networks to keep charging simple and convenient.

Yes — all new home chargers must be smart-enabled as part of the movement into more environmentally conscious tech; offering app control, off‑peak scheduling, and eligibility for the OZEV grant.

You may qualify if you own a flat or rent a property with private off‑street parking, have an OZEV‑approved EV or PHEV, and use an OZEV‑approved installer. The grant covers up to 75% of costs (max £350).

If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch and we give you the answers, or together we will find them.

Yes — EV chargers must be hard‑wired for safety, reliability, and compliance. Standard 3‑pin plugs aren’t built for sustained high power, so a certified hard‑wired installation is essential.

The infrastructure we install for your EV charging point is future‑ready for Vehicle‑to‑Grid (V2G) technology. While some additional regulatory steps may be required once the government fully rolls it out, the short answer is yes—if you choose a V2G‑compatible charging point, which are already available on the market. However, it’s important to note that most chargers currently in use are not V2G compatible, so selecting the right unit is essential if you want to benefit from this feature in the future.

We have a favourite EV Charging point, and that is the units from Simpson & Partners. Read more on why here.

AJ installed a 32A commando socket outside for use as an EV charger. Challenges were to insert earth rod to comply with regulations and also ensure ground beneath was clear of pipes/cables as there was no builder's plan showing where services were connected to the property.AJ was the only one of the several local electricians to follow through with the proposal and offer a reasonable quote for the job. Prompt in fixing appointment date and stuck to it. He agreed to source parts from wholesalers. Although there was issue with the part, he made sure he got a correct replacement on the same day, resolved other cable connection issues and finished the job with his cheerful nature.I'd highly... recommend him for any electrical job the house.read more

Was very impressed with the professionalism of this team. As well as being v friendly, I am confident of the quality of the installation and their thoroughness shone through - they sorted out a couple of dodgy earthings to boot and even alerted me to a potential issue with a recent EV chargepoint installation, beyond the call of duty (and of no financial interest to them). Would not hesitate to use again or recommend

No job is too small and their charges are very reasonable.Having discovered this company a couple of years ago, I wouldn't go anywhere else and would happily recommend them to anyone.
