The Challenge: Two EV Chargers on a Limited Domestic Supply

Our team do a lot of EV Charger installations, and we always enjoy it when a job comes through requesting Simpson&Partners (S&P) charging points. Installing on a domestic project for individual client in Wiltshire, centred around the installation of double S&P EV chargers. The task also involved fabricating a custom mount or brace to accommodate both chargers seamlessly.

One of the primary challenges faced was the limited electrical supply available, as only enough capacity existed for one charger, previously installed. To address this, we implemented a solution: de-rating each charger to 16A, allowing both to operate simultaneously without overloading the circuit. This technical adaptation ensured the safe and efficient operation of the chargers, enabling the client to charge two vehicles concurrently.

The Solution: De-Rated Chargers with Twin Consumer Units

The project saw the installation of two consumer units, each equipped with double pole Type A RCD protection, ensuring enhanced safety and compliance with electrical regulations. Notably, the chargers were configured to work in tandem, preventing circuit overload and facilitating the simultaneous charging of two vehicles. This innovative approach prioritised convenience and flexibility for the client.

The Result: Simultaneous Home Charging for Two Vehicles

In just 1.5 days, our team successfully completed the installation of double S&P EV chargers for our client in Wiltshire, showcasing our expertise in domestic electrical solutions. By overcoming challenges and implementing tailored adaptations, we ensured the efficient operation of the charging system while prioritising safety and compliance. The client now enjoys the convenience of charging two vehicles simultaneously from the aesthetically pleasing S&P chargers in cotswold green, mounted on a custom bracket in their barn garage in Wiltshire.

Frequently asked questions

Why fit Simpson and Partners chargers?

They are British-made, OZEV-approved, and available tethered or untethered, which covers most domestic requirements. Build quality and the support relationship matter over a unit expected to last a decade outdoors. Being on the OZEV list also means the installation qualifies for grant funding where the customer is eligible.

Can one property have more than one EV charger?

Yes, subject to supply capacity. Two chargers on a standard single-phase domestic supply usually need load management so the combined draw cannot exceed the available capacity. Your installer calculates this and either specifies load balancing or applies to the DNO for a supply upgrade.

What is load balancing on an EV charger?

A control feature that monitors total property demand and reduces charging current when other loads are high, then increases it again when demand drops. It prevents the main fuse being overloaded and often avoids the need for a costly supply upgrade, at the cost of slightly slower charging at peak times.

Does an EV charger need servicing?

Not routinely, but it should be inspected periodically as part of the property EICR, and the manufacturer may specify checks to maintain warranty. The cable and connector see the most wear and should be checked for damage regularly, since they are handled daily and exposed to weather.

What warranty comes with a home EV charger?

Typically three years from the manufacturer on the unit, with installation workmanship covered separately by the installer. Registering the unit after installation is usually required to activate the full term. Keep the installation certificate, as warranty claims normally require evidence of compliant installation.
