You can legally do some electrical work in your own home. Most jobs are not notifiable, but all electrical work must still meet the wiring regulations, BS 7671. Anything notifiable, such as a new circuit, a consumer unit change, or work in a bathroom, must be done by a registered electrician or signed off by Building Control.

For homeowners, an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is recommended every 10 years, and whenever you buy a property or notice signs of a problem. Landlords are legally required to hold a satisfactory EICR renewed at least every 5 years. The report grades any faults as C1, C2, C3 or FI, and a C1 or C2 makes it unsatisfactory until the remedial work is done.

Not always. A charger needs its own dedicated circuit with the right RCD protection. If your existing board has rewirable fuses, no spare ways or the incorrect type of RCD, it will need replacing first. Notifiable work, such as a new circuit, a consumer unit change or wiring in a bathroom, is registered through our NICEIC Domestic Installer scheme, so you receive an electrical installation certificate and a Building Regulations compliance certificate without dealing with the council yourself. Non-notifiable work still gets a certificate for your records.
