What does a house rewire involve?
A rewire replaces the cabling, sockets, switches and usually the consumer unit, bringing the whole installation up to the current BS 7671 standard. We work room by room to keep disruption down, then test, certify and hand over an Electrical Installation Certificate with Building Regulations notification, so the work is properly signed off and safe to build on.
What a Rewire Involves
A rewire means replacing some or all of the fixed wiring, sockets, switches, and consumer unit in a property. The aim is to bring the installation up to current BS 7671 standards and give it the capacity to handle what is being asked of it now, and in the foreseeable future.
On a domestic rewire, that typically means stripping back to the structure, running new cable, fitting a modern consumer unit with RCD or RCBO protection, and installing new sockets, switches, and lighting points throughout. It is disruptive, there is no way around that, but a good team works efficiently and protects the property throughout.
Commercial and industrial rewires are larger in scale and need more coordination. Heavier loads, three-phase supplies, emergency lighting, fire alarm integration, and compliance requirements all factor in. We phase the work to keep disruption to a minimum, and we are experienced at working around live operations when the business cannot shut down.
How to Tell If You Need a Rewire
Some signs are obvious. Others only come out during an inspection. Any of the following is worth a conversation with a qualified electrician.
Frequent tripping or blown fuses

Rewiring FAQs
Will I get certification after a rewire?
Yes. On completion we fully test the installation and issue an Electrical Installation Certificate confirming compliance with BS 7671. You should keep this, you will need it for building control, insurance, and any future sale of the property.
How much does a rewire cost?
Costs depend on property size, layout, number of circuits, and complexity. A one-bed flat sits at the lower end, a four or five-bed house at the higher end. We give a written, itemised estimate after a site visit so you know exactly what is included.
How disruptive is a rewire?
It is one of the more disruptive jobs in a property. Floorboards come up, walls get chased, and there will be dust. We work efficiently, protect surfaces and furnishings, and keep the disruption as contained as we can, but it is important to go in with realistic expectations.
Can I stay in my house during a rewire?
It is possible, but it will not be comfortable. Power will be off for periods, there will be significant mess in working areas, and some rooms will be out of action. A lot of our domestic rewire clients choose to stay elsewhere during the main phase of the work if they can.
Does my business have to close for a commercial rewire?
Not necessarily. We can phase the work across evenings, weekends, or quieter periods to keep the business running. It takes more planning, but that is our job. We will agree a programme with you before any work starts.
