How do you plan kitchen lighting properly?
In layers. Ambient lighting covers the room generally, task lighting covers worktops and the hob where you actually need it, and accent lighting picks out features. Planning all three together at design stage avoids the common result of one bright ceiling light casting shadows onto the work surface.
Do kitchen lights need special protection?
Kitchens are not a special location under BS 7671 in the way bathrooms are, but proximity to sinks and heat sources still matters. Fittings near a sink need suitable IP ratings, and all circuits require 30mA RCD protection under current regulations, including lighting since Amendment 4.
Can decorative pendants be fitted to a standard ceiling rose?
Sometimes, but heavier fittings need proper mechanical support rather than relying on the rose. Long pendants over an island also need the drop height set carefully so they light the surface without obstructing sight lines. Both are best resolved before plastering rather than after.
Is under-cabinet lighting worth adding?
For task lighting it is the single most effective addition to a kitchen. It puts light directly on the worktop where you are working, rather than behind you where your body casts a shadow. LED strip is low profile, efficient, and can be dimmed or zoned separately from the main lighting.
Should kitchen lighting be on a dimmer?
It is worth it for the ambient layer, less so for task lighting. Dimmable LEDs need a compatible dimmer module, as mismatched pairings cause flicker and buzz and shorten lamp life. Confirm the driver and dimmer are specified together rather than assuming any dimmer will work.
